“Yoga does not just change the way we see things;
it transforms the person who sees.”
- BKS Iyengar -
Are you considering starting a yoga practice? Maybe your doctor has suggested you start a practice or you’ve just always been interested in yoga, but for some reason you’ve never actually taken the plunge. Since I earned my 200 hour yoga teacher training certificate, I have become a resource for family and friends to ask questions about yoga. They are the type of questions that maybe they were afraid to go into an ACTUAL yoga studio and ask but felt safe asking me. This post is a compilation of some of the most frequent information I share with these soon to be yogis.
Do I have to wear snug fitting clothing? I’m self-conscious about my body. In short - No. You always get to do YOU in a yoga class. Your mat is your space, including what you wear. However, there is a legitimate reason why most yogis wear snug fitting clothes to yoga class. It’s so when you are hanging upside down in down dog and moving through asanas you don’t end up with your t-shirt around your ears. Also, if your clothes are too loose, it’s a distraction to have to keep adjusting them during class.
I don’t know anything about yoga. Where do I start? With your BREATH. If your are breathing, you are doing yoga. Your breath is the MOST important part of your yoga practice. Always. Let your breath be your guide throughout your practice. If it becomes strained or tense, it is a signal that you have gone to far into a pose - it’s time to back out. Respect your body. It’s not about the pose, it’s about the breath.
You are looking for SENSATION and NOT PAIN. Yoga is never meant to be painful. Again your mat is your space and this is your journey - ignore what is going on at the mat next to yours…seriously. If you feel pain in a pose that is your body’s signal to STOP. You are looking for a pleasant stretchy sensation that you can easily breath through.
Who are some good resources I can look at on YouTube for Beginner Classes?

What is a life coach?
Somebody who holds a compassionate, safe space for you to share your thoughts and feelings.
Somebody who provides you an extra pair of eyes on your brain, increasing your awareness of how it works.
Somebody who teaches you an alternate way of thinking when the ways you have been thinking in the past no longer serve you.
Somebody who believes you can get the outcomes you want in your life and will encourage you every step of the way.
Somebody who challenges you to dream bigger and step into the future version of you.
Somebody who will say things you won’t want to hear but will always say them with love and compassion.
This is an investment in yourself that you deserve.
